News

After considerable paperwork, Clem Medley was successful in retaining our non-profit 501(c)3 status with the IRS. This translates to the ability of the Harnett County Business Education Partnership to accept funding from both business and private sectors on a tax deductable basis.

Job Shadowing

Job Shadowing slowed during the months of December and January due to the holidays and testing and exams. However, the numbers look good for the year with Harnett Central in the lead with 38 shadowing, Overhills with 15, Triton with a total of 18 (no report available for January), and Western Harnett with 8 (no report available for January).

Curriculum

All four of last semester's presentations were completed. With the exception of a few "bumps" along the way it was a successful semester.

The first session of this semester has been scheduled and Chuck Beidler is working on scheduling the other three.

Web Site Update

Our web site will start to list our sponsors and contributors. We will also be posting the Scholarship Application on the site for parents and students to download.

Career Exploration

After discussions with school officials, students and Board members, the decision was made to hold the annual Career Fairs only in the high schools for 10th grade high school students.

This will be a benefit to business' who, in the past have participated in both middle and high school fairs.

This year's Career Fairs will be held on March 1st and March 15th. The first will be held at Western Harnett High School and will include Overhills High School. The second will be held at Harnett Central High School and will include Triton High School.

It was the concensus of the discussions that middle school students are not fully prepared for making decisions concerning their career paths. Some of the students we spoke with told us that they did not even remember the career fairs they attended while in middle school.

New Career Pathways Booklets are at the printers now and will be available soon.

President’s Message

I’m excited to announce The Harnett County Business/Education Partnership’s plans for the 2005-2006 year are being fulfilled everyday. We have our first semester curriculum presentations behind us and now scheduling our 2nd semester sessions. Our career fairs for the 10th graders are set and working on details at this time. The Teacher tours committee is meeting to plan a tour that the teachers can use toward their certification hours. We have a scholarship application prepared and ready to distribute to the high schools. Our contribution letters were sent out to past contributors and we are receiving contributions in every week. And our schools are working on helping their students participate in the job shadowing program that we have available.

We had a few changes to one of our existing programs and a new program added this year. In the past we had career fairs for the 8th graders and another career fair for the 12th graders and it now is held for the 10th graders in each high school. We also added a scholarship program providing a $500.00 scholarship to a senior from each high school. We are very interested in seeing how these changes work out. We also plan to revamp our curriculum presentations in the future. We are always open for new ideas for our organization so please share them if you know of anything we can do to better serve our students.

If you have received a letter asking for financial support or volunteering we hope that you will consider joining us so that we can make a difference in the lives of our students and their future careers. If you don’t have the time to devote we are always in need of finances so please help with our efforts and support the Harnett County Business/Education Partnership. If you have questions please call the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce Office at 910-892-4113 or myself at 910-893-7540.
